In some surprising news (to some, including me), Burlington MPP Joyce Savoline, who was elected in 2007 and has so far only served one term as the PC member for the riding, has decided she will not run in the 2011 election.
Just a while before you'll remember I wrote about the possible turmoil brewing among the Tories in this bastion of conservatism just north of Hamilton. It was touched off by the Hudak PCs approaching former Burlington Mayor Rob MacIsaac to become their new candidate, which sparked allegations of possible horse-trading going on behind the scenes in the riding.
Savoline doesn't really give any reasons for her departure, at least none that I can glean off of the Star article, or any other news media at the current time (though expect some in the future). It could be due to a number of reasons, including the fact that she's not necessarily a Hudak/Harris-brand Tory, she's served three decades in public service, or she's been forced out by internal machinations.
But it does mean we're left with at least two options about this entire situation:
1. Savoline always intended to resign, warned the PC leadership, and they sought a new candidate
2. Savoline was organized against or pushed out by the leadership or someone, who were looking for a better candidate
Until we know more, this is all we have to go on. It's very possible she simply doesn't want to run again, but we'll have to wait and see...
